Missing Chromebook Serial Number?

When it is difficult to read the serial number on the bottom housing of a Chromebook, here are some methods to reveal it.  For school owned Chromebooks this is a common problem that we have encountered.

First try rebooting the Chromebook and when it loads the Welcome screen hit (ALT + V) and the serial number will appear in the top right corner of the screen.

If that does not work then try these methods below. Each method listed will erase all user data on the Chromebook and restore it to factory settings.

Powerwash Method
Note: This option may not be enabled for managed Chromebooks.

=> Option 1: Reset using shortcut keys
Sign out of your Chromebook.
Press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r.
Click Restart.
In the box that appears, click Powerwash and then Continue.

The chromebook will restart and when it loads the Welcome screen hit (ALT + V) and the serial number will appear in the top right corner of the screen.

=> Option 2: Reset using the Settings menu
Sign in to your Chromebook.
Click your account photo.
Click Settings Settings.
At the bottom, click Advanced.
In the “Powerwash” section, click Powerwash and then Restart.

The chromebook will restart and when it loads the Welcome screen hit (ALT + V) and the serial number will appear in the top right corner of the screen.

OS Verification Method
Note: This option will only work for managed chromebooks.

Hit (Esc + refresh + power) to start the wipe process
Hit (Ctrl + D) on the recovery screen (yellow exclamation mark)

Hit (Enter) on the screen that states: “To turn OS verification OFF, press enter. Your system will restart.”

On the next screen which has the red exclamation mark, let the system proceed to the next screen automatically.

Then, on the next screen which states: “The device owner has disabled developer mode for this device” again, let the system reboot automatically

When the chromebook restarts you will be at the screen that states: choose your language and network, you don’t need to fill this out just hit (ALT + V) and the serial number will display in the top right corner of the screen.

Restore OS Method
Open Chrome
Install the recovery app.
Open the recovery app.
Click Get started.

Click Select a model from a list, or type in the model number of the Chromebook you want to recover. To find this number, look at the bottom of the error message on your Chromebook screen.

Click Continue.

Insert your USB flash drive or SD card into the computer.
In the dropdown menu, choose the USB flash drive or SD card you inserted.

Click Continue.
Click Create now.

When you see a message saying that your recovery media is ready, remove the USB flash drive or SD card from the computer.

Use the shortcut Esc+Refresh (above the #4 key), then press down the Power button and wait until you get the Exclamation Point Chrome OS is missing screen.

Plug in your recovery drive.
Wait for the image process to complete (about 5 minutes).
Remove USB flash drive and it will automatically reboot.

Once the chromebook restarts and when it loads the Welcome screen hit (ALT + V) and the serial number will appear in the top right corner of the screen.
